    Six financial levers to accelerate the decarbonisation of the construction and operation of European buildings
    Published in June 2021

    Over the course of 6 months, the team at Climate Strategy & Partners –led by its CEO Peter Sweatman- conducted -in a research project funded by the Laudes Foundation- deep policy and scientific research, and a set of interviews with key experts from different sectors to identify Six Financial-Policy Levers to accelerate the decarbonisation of the construction and operation of European buildings.

    The need for critical measures in this sector stems from the fact that, over a third of EU’s buildings are over 50 years old, and 97% of them are not energy label class A.

Launched in June 2021, this document details the urgent financial-policy measures which can decarbonise EU buildings in line with the Renovation Wave Strategy, including:

  • The characteristics of the EU building stock and the decarbonisation challenges it poses;
  • Analysis on the finance and investment related policy levers, and how they act differently in different buildings sub-sectors;
  • Set of strategies drafted by CS and how they address the complexity of decarbonising EU buildings; and
  • The different opportunities for decarbonisation offered by the different technologies, initiatives, and current and forthcoming regulation.

In addition, this report was launched with a successful webinar event which gathered senior experts hailing from the ESG, real estate, and finance/investment spaces (EIB, DWS Group, and Aquila Capital) who developed their insights on the subject to then engage with the audience answering questions, and reflected on the different issues and proposals mentioned during the event. *See webinar in full in the tab above.
